Overview
An inflatable penile prosthesis is a permanent implant placed within the penis to treat the symptoms of erectile dysfunction (ED). These discrete medical devices are custom-fit for the individual to help them produce a natural-looking erection on demand. Penile implants are popular among men who desire sexual spontaneity without depending on pills or injections.
At Progressive Urology, we offer inflatable penile implants, which provide a more natural look and feel than other types of prosthesis. Inflatable penile implants are a 3-piece system, including a fluid-filled reservoir under the abdominal wall, a pump/release valve inside the scrotum and two inflatable cylinders inside the penis itself.
To achieve an erection with an inflatable implant, the man will pump fluid from the reservoir into the inflatable cylinders. Afterward, he may release the valve inside the scrotum, which will drain the fluid back into the reservoir.
What to expect:
Penile implants are usually recommended after more conservative ED therapies have failed. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia with antibiotics delivered via IV to prevent infection. The operation may take 45 minutes to an hour to complete.
After surgery, the patient may experience pain and discomfort for several weeks. Stitches are usually removed two weeks after surgery, and physical/sexual activity may be resumed four weeks post-surgery.
